Fire Suppression for New Power Plants

January 28, 2011

When a new power plant undergoes construction, there are hundreds of critical considerations that must be addressed so various systems work seamlessly. Black Hills Energy Capital, Inc., which has two new plants, required well-engineered pump systems to manage fire suppression, condensate, HRSG and turbine drains water for myriad plant-related services. Quadna, a DXP Company, was awarded three separate contracts to assist with these critical plant pump systems.

Black Hills Energy Capital, Inc., an independent power subsidiary of Black Hills Corporation, currently is developing natural gas electric generating facilities capable of generating up to 500 megawatts and which will adjoin its other generating plants. The energy produced from the two plants – one simple cycle and one combined cycle - will be sold to wholesale energy markets and serve communities in Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Denver, Colo.

Brock Tisdale, area sales manager and engineer for Quadna’s Golden, Colo., office, says the company’s Phoenix and Golden offices teamed up to design and fabricate the dual electric fire pump system, the six duplex HRSG/turbine drain skids and other product lines used in the construction of the power plant pump systems including Goulds and BJM submersible pumps, for the power owner.
